Transport Planner

 

Summary of duties: 

To efficiently plan deliveries to retail outlets across UK and Ireland utilising all mediums of transport (Parcels - Van’s – HGV Fleet), own fleet, parcel carriers, pallet carriers, and 3PL.


Primary Focus:

  • 100% Next Day Service in Full
  • To plan the weekly fixed offshore services
  • Cost to Serve
  • Planning within the constraints of driver’s hours
  • Vehicle Utilisation
  • Producing a timely plan to drive the warehouse activity


This role will utilise planning software.

 

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Plan Parcel Deliveries (Approx 150 Per Day)
  • Plan Own Deliveries (Approx 200 Per Day) – 20 Vehicles
  • Plan 3Pl Deliveries (Approx 100 Per Day) – 10 Vehicles
  • Plan Pallet Carrier (30 Deliveries Per Day)
  • Plan Offshore – (20 Deliveries Per Day)
  • Budget £3m (PA)

 

  • Provide a safe working environment, adhering to health, safety and environmental procedures and ensuring they are understood and practised at all times.
  • To produce a plan timely that enables the warehouse team pick/pack & dispatch in a timely manner.
  • Produce a delivery plan that effectively and efficiently manages the delivery operation from drivers leaving site to drivers returning to depot.
  • To produce a plan that considers, drivers’ hours, vehicle costs, subcontractor costs and all relevant legislative requirements.
  • To balance the drivers’ hours.
  • Plan the collection of returned goods from customers to meet the company KPI’s.
  • Review the planning operation from the Plan / Do / Review process in conjunction with the Transport Manager to make the necessary changes to improve the planning process.
  • To review cost to serve and OTIF (on time and in full) with the transport manager on a weekly basis and make recommendations where appropriate.
  • To provide statistical data to evidence performance of function.

 

Key internal and external relationships:

  • Build good communication with all departments within Lake View House and 3rd party providers to ensure smooth running of the operation.
  • Develop a sustainable relationship with the drivers to ensure they are meeting all the requirements of the transport plan and legal requirements.
  • Work closely with the Warehouse management team to develop and deliver the transport plan.

 

Key skills and qualitifications: 

  • Extensive knowledge of the UK road network
  • Understanding of cost to serve
  • Good communications skills
  • Eye for detail
  • Good understanding the Working Time Directive & EU Drivers Hours
  • Able to work to tight deadlines
  • Able to prioritise workload
  • Good IT skills
  • 3 Years’ experience within a FMCG transport environment
  • Actively seek to review and improve all aspects of the transport planning process to improve the service to the customers
