What should I do if my tap handle is stiff or won’t turn?

A stiff handle is caused by mineral deposits, worn seals, or corrosion around the cartridge spindle. Cleaning or replacing the cartridge usually resolves the issue. If you are experiencing a tight or seized handle, grinding or squeaking when turning, or a tap that doesn't fully close, the following steps can help resolve the issue:

  1. Isolate both water supplies.
  2. Remove the handle and trim.
  3. Clean visible scale from the cartridge using vinegar or descaler.
  4. Apply a small amount of silicone grease
  5. Reassemble and check movement.
  6. If the handle is still stiff, replace the cartridge.

Tip: Operate the tap weekly to keep seals lubricated and prevent stiffness from infrequent use.
